Timber Cruising and Appraisal: Cruising determines the quantity and quality of timber on a given piece of property. The timber cruise’s role is to supply the numerical data required to make proper managerial decisions. Evenly spaced sample plots are established on the property and at each plot tree attributes are recorded. Once adequate field data is attained from these sample plots the information is run through a computer cruise compiler which will generate an accurate estimate of your properties volume, basal area, board footage, mean tree diameter, and much more. After a forester has compiled your woodlot's cruise and volume data has been obtained a current fair market value is assigned by species and you would have a very good estimate of what your timber is worth.

Timber Marking: Trees on your property are designated with paint prior to logging. The trees are marked either to be cut or to be left, dependent on species, health, stocking, and aesthetic objectives of the landowner. A stump mark is placed on each tree marked to be sure that only those trees specifically chosen by the forester are cut by your logging contractor. Timber marking ensures the property is harvested correctly, follows all Best Management Practices for New York State, and ensures proper silviculture has been implemented.

Definition of SILVICULTURE - Silviculture is the manipulation of forest vegetation to accomplish a specified set of objectives. It controls forest establishment, composition, and growth.

Property Line Delineations: Surveys and property line delineations are often completed through the use of retracing old lines, pacing, chaining, running compass traverses, and using GPS technology. Any existing survey evidence is also useful for this process. Our foresters always recommend that all adjoining landowners agree upon boundaries flagged in blue, before further action, such as timber removal, begins. We recommend that all timber extraction remain at a safe distance from the newly established boundary, to avoid possible timber trespass violations.

Forest Stand Evaluations: A Creekside Forestry Services client may simply like to walk his or her woodlot with a forester to learn about their woodlot's species composition, natural regeneration, wildlife, recreational possibilities, or state and federal forest management programs they may qualify for. Our foresters can also assist you with the New York State Timber Growth Tax Law or 480a tax exemptions you may qualify for.

Stream Management Zone Delineations: Creekside Foresters have experience working with and around wetlands, streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. We value the ecological importance of our northern wetland regions and have extensive training in making routine wetland determinations for forestry related activities. Whenever a landowner is considering timber extraction, now or for future management purposes they should have a forester properly buffer those areas. Buffer widths are dependent upon the potential activity, and also what kind of hydrological feature we would be dealing with. It is also important for landowners to understand the residual basal areas law requires you to leave on certain forested sites here in the Adirondack State Park.

Woodlot Management Plans: We can compile both long and short-term plans written in a way that best reflects the objectives of the landowner and the best use of the resource both ecologically and economically. Through the use of these plans our foresters can assist private woodlot owners in obtaining a Tree Growth Tax Exemption from the state of New York.

480a Tax Management Plans: If a client owns 50 or more acres in New York they may qualify for a Tree Growth Tax Exemption. This Tax Exemption is called 480a. A forest landowner in these cases can place their property under the written management plan compiled by their forester. The management plan is submitted for review to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and upon approval should be implemented. Landowners at this point in time commit to keeping their property in tree growth for a period of time and will receive a significant tax break for that property under management. Please call for more details or visit the New York Department of Environmental Conservation website to see if this option is right for you.  http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dlf/privland/privassist/taxlaw.html

Timber Trespass Estimates: If a forest landowner believes that an adjoining landowner's timber harvest has crossed their property lines they may be victims of a timber trespass. A consulting forester can accurately estimate the species composition, volume, and value that was removed on the trespassed land. Please call if you have concerns of  a trespass situation. Due to their nature each situation is different and must be viewed objectively.

Note: There are many other forestry related services that our company may be able to provide to our clients. If you have any question related to your forested property please call or write us an email. We will be sure to get back to you as quickly as possible.
